Drawing & Painting: Color Harmonies in Botanical Art
Instructor: Barbara Holmer

Botanical art is an art form that combines scientific accuracy with artistic sensitivity and aesthetic. Welcome autumn with an exploration of color harmonies in traditional botanical art using colored pencil* or watercolor* to create one or more drawings or paintings. Subjects will be provided for the first class. *Bring all supplies that are relevant to your chosen medium to the first class.

Prerequisite: Previous experience with chosen medium of colored pencil or watercolor.

12:30 pm – 3:30 pm, 8 sessions

SUPPLY LIST FOR COLORED PENCIL OR WATERCOLOR
GENERAL:
-kneaded eraser and white plastic eraser (Staedtler Mars) -sighting stick, divider, or plastic grid ruler -.5mm mechanical pencils with leads (HB) -small (1”) hake brush or other soft brush -drawing board *or foam core (about 11”x14”) -1/2" artist's tape or 1" low tack painter's tape
PAPER: 9"x12" -Graphics 360 layout paper or other translucent layout paper -Saral transfer paper (graphite) if you have it-Tracing paper-HOT PRESS watercolor paper (for watercolor or colored pencil) Blick Premiere HP
OR: Saunders Waterford HP 140# Traditional or High White
OR:Arches HP 140# -Stonehenge Drawing Paper (for colored pencil) -Strathmore series 400 or 500 Bristol Board Vellum surface (for colored pencil)
OR:-Sketchbook (Mixed Media if using watercolor)
COLORED PENCILS: (NOT water-soluble pencils!)** -Faber Castel Polychromos (preferred: can be used with watercolor) -Lyra Splendor Blender-pencil sharpener that gives a good point ex: Staedtler hand held sharpener, 2 hole tubUni or Derwent manual sharpener
WATERCOLORS: bring what you have
OR:-Winsor Newton Winsor Lemon, Winsor Yellow Deep,
Quinacridone Magenta or Permanent Rose, Scarlet LakeWinsor Blue (green shade), Cobalt Blue Deep, French UltramarineOptional: Burnt Sienna, Cerulean Blue
OR:-Daniel SmithHansa Yellow Light, New Gamboge, Quinacridone Rose, Pyrrol Scarlet, Phthalo Blue (green shade), French Ultramarine Blue
ALSO:-White plastic or porcelain paint palette with at least 6 wells plus mixing area-Round watercolor brush with good point ex: Princeton Velvetouch round #2 and #4 Utrecht Sablette Series 228 round #2 and #4 Da Vinci Cosmotop Spin #2 and #4
- Lint-free cloth or Viva or Bounty Paper Towels- Water container
