Painting: Watercolor Level 1 & 2
Instructor: Diane Roach Smith


This class is for the student who wants to learn more about watercolor painting after taking the Introductory classes with Diane. Projects will be medium in size depending on the student’s choice.

In this class, students will learn:

• Watercolor techniques through instructor demonstrations and apply this knowledge to their own projects.

• Composition, color theory and watercolor techniques using various subject matter will be covered in class. Students are encouraged to use their own references for projects. Independent painting and student mentoring will also be a part of the class. There is a materials list for this class; students are required to bring all materials.

A class field trip may take place during the semester for one class meeting date.

Prerequisite: At least four previous classes — 2-3 semesters of the Intro Level Watercolor classes plus a Level 1 class.

Brushes:1 Hake brush to use for washes1 Round #10 soft animal hair or synthetic brush1 Round #6 soft animal hair or synthetic brush1 flat 1/2 brush
Paints:I instruct with (PROFESSIONAL)watercolor tubes and a lot of them are transparent staining and non-staining watercolor. The list below is just a suggestion. Please do not go out and buy all these if it is a budget concern. Just make sure they are professional grade and you have a cool and warm of each of the primaries.
I instruct with Windsor and Newton Professional Paints. There are other professional paints available such as Daniel Smith / Holbein/ Schmincke: Horadam.You will need a Cool and a Warm of the Primaries.
Suggestions are:Windsor and Newton ColorsYellow/ Windsor Lemon (Cool)New Gamboge (warm)Red/ Perm Alizarin Crimson (warm yellow undertones)Perm Rose(Pink Red)Blue/ French Ultramarine Blue (warm)Phthalo Blue orWindsor Blue Green Shade(cool)
Secondary Colors:Windsor and NewtonTransparent OrangePermanent Sap Green Windsor and NewtonBurnt Sienna (a good color to have in your box) - I often make this color with blue and orange.Extra Blue Cobalt or (Manganese Blue Hue) I like Daniel Smith brand.Extra Pink (Opera Rose)
Pallette:A larger square or rectangle palette with at least 8 wells to put the tube paint in it should have a cover. Mijello is a good brand and you can get it on Amazon.I have portable small round painting palettes for sale. I have a few small covered palettes also that you can purchase.
Paper:I suggest using only 100% cotton rag professional paper. Arches is a good paper. The size depends on your budget and or you comfort level for size of painting. #140 lb Cold Press is the lightest that I use.
