Ceramics: Clay & Glaze Chemistry / Materials & Processes
Intermediate-Advanced

This hands-on course introduces the science behind ceramic materials, focusing on the chemistry of clay and glaze. Students will learn how to mix and test clay bodies and glaze recipes from raw materials, troubleshoot common surface issues, and understand how firing cycles and kiln atmospheres affect results. Through lectures, demonstrations, and lab work, students will develop a working knowledge of ceramic materials and gain the skills to create and refine their own clay and glaze formulas.
Topics Include:
• Clay body formulation and testing
• Glaze chemistry and surface effects
• Colorants, opacifiers, and glaze defects
• Kiln-loading and firing analysis
Prerequisite: Must have at least two previous ceramics classes (including one intermediate level) and be working at an intermediate/advanced level.

- Apron (or wear clothes that can get stained or dirty)
