Description
Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder in Individuals with Developmental Disabilities: A Guide for Support Workers and Caregivers
This presentation aims to deepen understanding and provide practical guidance for support workers and caregivers who work with individuals who have both Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and developmental disabilities. We will explore the unique ways in which BPD manifests in this population, highlighting the challenges these individuals face in regulating emotions, forming stable relationships, and managing impulsive behaviors.
Key topics will include:
• An Overview of Borderline Personality Disorder: What BPD is, common symptoms, and its impact on behavior and functioning.
• Developmental Disabilities and BPD: How developmental disabilities can interact with and influence the expression of BPD symptoms.
• Recognizing Signs and Symptoms: The role of trauma and indicators of BPD in individuals with developmental disabilities.
• Effective Strategies for Support and Care: Techniques and approaches for managing challenging behaviors, supporting emotional regulation, and fostering positive social interactions.
• Building Empathy and Effective Communication: The importance of building trust and understanding, while using tailored communication strategies to support individuals with both BPD and developmental disabilities.
• Self-Care: The crucial role of self-care for support staff and caregivers in creating a comprehensive care plan.
By the end of this session, caregivers and support workers will have a better understanding of how BPD presents in individuals with developmental disabilities and will be equipped with practical tools to provide compassionate and effective support.
