This comprehensive program prepares students to work as pharmacy technicians in retail, or other pharmacy settings, and to take the ExCPT exam. Students will be required to attend 60 hours of class time and 160 externship hours at a local pharmacy. We have partnered with CVS to provide externships. Classroom content includes pharmacy medical terminology, history of pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Through classroom lecture and hands-on labs, students will review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the top 200 drugs, IV flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic technique, handling of sterile products, total parenteral nutrition, dispensing prescriptions, inventory control, and billing and reimbursement. Students must successfully pass a criminal background and drug screening (cost included in class fee). For pharmacy technician licensure in Virginia, candidates must not have had a history of drug-related crimes. Student will be responsible for registration as a pharmacy technician trainee through the Virginia Board of Pharmacy ($20 fee not included in class fee). After successfully completing this course, students qualify to take the certifying exam. High school diploma or equivalency required. Testing fee is not included.
