No class on Tuesday, May 13th.
Learn the fundamentals of working with book board, card stock, and paper to bind journals, albums, and construct boxes. Students will learn various binding structures and related techniques including how to make book cloth, painted paper, and collage. There are 6 sessions throughout the year, and each will have a different focus. More advanced students work independently.
Session 3 will cover variations of the Coptic binding structures and single sheet bindings. Learn how to assemble text blocks, make jig templates and glue decorative paper or book cloth onto the book board covers. Design options for the front cover will be considered.
Class Objective:
The basics of sewing a text block to hard covers with Coptic binding techniques.
Designs for the front cover; create a recessed panel or raised cutout shapes.
Materials provided: a variety of cover weight paper, card stock, text weight paper, book board and graph paper; waxed linen thread; a couple cutting mats and rulers; painter’s tape; weights; PVA glue and starch paste; binder clips, stencils, stamps, and ink.
