Alla prima, or "at first attempt" is a painting approach that emphasizes spontaneity, directness, and a fresh, vibrant quality is painting. Students will explore this exciting method through painting in their chosen medium of oil or acrylic. We will use a variety of subject matter including still life, landscape, portraiture & more to realize the full range of the alla prima technique. Students may bring their own reference material or work from the supplied references in class.
Each week will include a demo and a discussion followed by individual feedback while students work on their own paintings. We will cover basic fundamentals such as value, color, light, & more. This course is designed with students of all levels in mind, but some experience in drawing is encouraged.
MATERIALS:
Surfaces:
- Canvas, linen, or oil paper - size 5x7, 8x10, 9x12, or 11x14
Paints:
- Titanium White
- Cadmium Yellow
- Yellow Ochre
- Cadmium Red
- Alizarin Crimson
- Transparent Red Oxide
- Raw Umber
- Ultramarine Blue
- Ivory Black
Brushes:
- Assortment of bristle flats ( medium to large)
- Synthetic filberts (small to medium)
- Synthetic rounds ( 1 small, for drawing)
Solvent:
- Odorless mineral spirits (like gamsol)
Palette:
- Glass, wood or paper palette
