Description
The Chesapeake and Delaware Canal opened an additional pathway for shipping to and from the Port of Baltimore. A hundred years of planning and the work of thousands of people provided Baltimore a major boost in the competitive world of shipping. This 19th Century waterway provided a shortcut to the sea for cargo, then passengers. The story of the canal, its planners, its workers, their successes, the setbacks; stories of water and steam, ships large and small, some even designed to fit into the canal, even the ‘business” of canals are detailed in this review of the ‘back door to Baltimore’. Modern times renewed the canal until today it is an essential asset to the commerce of Baltimore’s Port.
