Period A: DIY Arts and Crafts Join us for this fun and crafty student-led enrichment class! You'll learn from current Athenian Upper students to make Do-it-Yourself art projects to take home, such as: crochet toys, jewelry pieces and tie-dye clothes--plus more projects tailored to your choice. Our Student Instructors say their hope is that students can take home their creations and "enjoy the feeling of accomplishment of making something by hand. They'll feel more confident in their own abilities and eager to try new things." We hope you join us! This course will be co-taught by two Athenian Student Instructors, Izzy K. and Maya B. Athenian Student Instructors are selected to teach in our program, and complete training where they learn the basics of lesson planning, facilitation skills, youth engagement and materials management. Throughout the Summer they will have support from the Summer Admin team as needed. They are thrilled to offer this course to younger students. Period B: Living in the Past: Indigenous History, Crafts and Games Native American tribes in the San Francisco Bay Area include the Ohlone, Coast Miwok, Ramaytush, Yokuts, and Muwekma. This session will explore various Native American tribes, their regions, traditional tools, early homes, cultural traditions, and forms of entertainment through selections of readings. Campers will engage in hands-on activities such as collage, basket weaving, toy-making, board game creation, and food making. Following these activities, campers will research a Native American tribe from the San Francisco Bay Area and decorate a shoebox diorama that reflects their findings. They will complete writing prompts related to Native American culture and craft a creative scene inside the diorama that represents their chosen tribe, following specific guidelines. Instructor Alice Kuang is a Math Instructor and Mandarin Instructor at Athenian and has a long career in education and summer camps.
