About this event
Instructor: Laura Kneib **PLEASE NOTE: The broom depicted in the PVAEC Fall 2025 Catalog is not the Turkey Wing Whisk Broom. A different broom was inadvertently used for the catalog photo. The photo depicted here is the correct version. Create your own functional art in this hands-on class where you’ll craft a beautiful and practical Turkey Wing Whisk Broom. With its strong, angled fan shape, this style is perfect for sweeping off workbenches, counters, or just showing off as a rustic fall accent. Using natural and fall-colored broomcorn in rich shades like rust, gold, and deep brown, students will learn traditional broom tying techniques to shape their own 15-inch whisk broom with a classic turkey wing design, approximately 9 inches wide and 1.5 inches thick. No experience necessary—all materials included. Come celebrate the season with a little broom magic! Join artisan H. Laura Kneib for a 4–6 hour, hands-on broom making workshop. Learn the craft’s history, use traditional techniques and natural materials, and create your own broom from start to finish. All tools and materials are provided—just bring a towel for your lap and any dried flowers or decorations you’d like to add for a personal touch. Please note: broom making is a physically demanding activity that requires good upper body and hand strength. H. Laura Kneib brings a lifetime of experience in traditional homesteading and settler crafts. She’s not only a skilled broom maker but also a master soap maker, fiber artist (spinning and weaving), chair caner, basket weaver, and potter. Kneib holds a B.A. in Fine Arts with a minor in Environmental Science and has dedicated her life to preserving and teaching heritage skills.
