One of Mozart's most popular operas, "The Magic Flute" is a delightful fantasy opera. Boasting a dream cast, this Metropolitan Opera performance conveys a magical sense of wonderment. The singing is magnificent. This opera, composed in 1791 and just two month's before Mozart's death, could be considered an early embodiment of bel canto singing which will become even more popular during the early part of the 19th century. Typical of 18th century German operas, this Singspiel style features great melodies with spoken (not sung) recitative.
