Rusalka By: Antonin Dvorak This Czech fairy tale opera premiered in 1901 and has remained increasingly popular in recent decades in the U.S. and Europe. It's always been standard repertoire in the Czech Republic. While not very well known in the U.S., Rusalka, as noted above, is gaining in popularity, and is performed more frequently thanks to its rapturously beautiful music, especially due to its Act 1 signature soprano aria, "Song to the Moon" - in this Metropolitan Opera performance sung by Renee Fleming. Rusalka is a tragic fairy tale loosely based on the fable by Hans Christian Andersen. The opera differs in some important respects from recent animation versions, e.g., by Disney. However, there are similarities as well. Basically, Rusalka, a water sprite, falls in love with a prince (and he with her). Things don't work out well and a witch curses Rusalka to an eternity of loneliness and sadness as the prince dies. The opera, unlike the Andersen story and Disney movie, ends tragically. As the opera ends after nearly 3 hours, Rusalka is doomed to an eternity of solitude and unhappiness. The music is absolutely gorgeous! For information/register call Ellicott City 50+ Center at 410-313-1400.
