Six IN-PERSON Sessions January 14, 21, 28, February 4, 11, 18 Explore Broadway’s rich history from its earliest days at the turn of the 20th century through its Golden Age in the 1950s and 60s. This engaging course traces the evolution of the genre—from minstrel shows and vaudeville to the groundbreaking works of Rodgers & Hammerstein and beyond. We'll examine how musicals reflected and shaped American culture, identity, and innovation on stage. Through lively discussion, video clips, and behind-the-scenes stories, you will gain a deeper appreciation for the composers, performers, and productions that laid the foundation of musical theater in America. John LaForge is director of Worship Arts at Gainesville First United Methodist Church, where he has served for more than 13 years. He is also artistic director and conductor of the Lanier Chamber Singers. For many years, John had a long and distinguished career as an opera singer, performing with opera companies and orchestras throughout the United States and abroad.
