Beyond the Blue: Cyanotypes and Botanical TonersSaturday, November 1511:00AM - 3:00PM
In this hands-on workshop, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of cyanotypes, including mixing chemicals, coating paper, and exposing and developing images. The workshop will also cover environmentally friendly techniques for bleaching and toning, pushing the medium beyond the typical blue hues associated with cyanotypes. Participants will be encouraged to experiment with different methods of photogram creation, using a variety of objects and plants to create interesting and meaningful compositions. Materials are included.
Amber Lee Williams (she/her) is an interdisciplinary artist based in the Niagara region known for her love of experimenting with different photographic techniques. She has a BA (Honours) in Studio Art from Brock University (2020) and an MFA from the University of Waterloo (2022). Amber's fascination with experimental photography is in the process of making photographs instead of merely taking them, something she considers to be an important distinction. Rather than having total control over her mediums, she enjoys the unpredictable outcomes and imperfections, viewing them as integral parts of the work. Some of the photographic techniques she works with are: Cyanotypes, Anthotypes, Polaroids, Lumens, and more. A mother of two daughters; family is at the center of her artistic practice. Her research resides in and around the home; observing and photographing the daily lives of her children, as well as drawing inspiration from the possessions and photographs left behind by deceased loved ones. Navigating the inevitable shifting of relationships, and thinking about how everyday objects can serve as prompts to remembering are important methodologies in her work. With a particular interest in the concepts of memory and loss, Amber's work serves as a poignant reflection on the ephemeral nature of existence. www.amberleeart.com
