In this 4-week class, students will explore how to bring still life compositions to life by studying the effects of light, surface quality, and form. Each week, we’ll tackle a different painting challenge—capturing the glow of reflective objects, rendering soft or rough textures, and understanding how to use shadow and contrast to define volume. Special attention will be given to light sources and how they affect color temperature, edges, and highlights across different materials. This class is ideal for those with some oil painting experience who are ready to refine their technique and build a more sophisticated understanding of how light and texture work together in a painting. In This Class, Students Will: -Deepen their understanding of light sources and how they impact a composition -Practice painting a variety of surfaces—shiny, matte, soft, hard, and transparent -Learn how to mix subtle color variations to suggest texture and form -Use shadows, highlights, and reflected light to create realistic depth -Explore figure or object placement for balanced and engaging still life setups -Build a finished still life painting from sketch to final layer using oil techniques
