Description
Pastels are pure pigments of vibrant colors that are traditionally used dry but can also be mixed with liquid mediums. Modern pastels were invented during the Renaissance and enjoyed by artists ever since. In this class you will develop your drawing skills and explore a versatile medium rich in color and full of expressive potential. You will try your hand at a variety of techniques including layering, controlling edges, and adding texture and depth. Pastels are a gateway to painting and a way to strengthen your drawing skills!
Topics Covered
This class will serve as an introductory course for students new to pastels. The elements and principles of design will be explored as you experiment with a variety of styles and genres. Color theory, color mixing, and layering are some of the topics to be introduced. Techniques will include dry wash, feathering, scumbling and dusting. Narrative works and other approaches to expression will be introduced. Instruction will include looking at the work of other artists, lectures, demonstrations, and individual support from the instructor.
