This abbreviated class format delves deeply into a specific topic not usually covered in Intermediate or Advanced classes. Special Topics classes are a great way to try new approaches to making pots, expand your technical repertoire, and take risks. Throwing large forms on the wheel can be both rewarding and challenging. In this three-week class we will go over the basics of how to work with larger amounts of clay on the wheel. In the first half we will discuss how to adapt our technique for centering, collaring, pulling, and ribbing larger pieces. In the second half we will cover coil and sectional throwing as a way to incrementally build larger pieces. Our goals are to identify the unique challenges and considerations of throwing larger pieces, lean new techniques to overcome these hurdles, and have lot of on-the-wheel practice. Participants should already feel comfortable throwing 2 pounds of clay.
