A dynamic industry unfolded in Baltimore during the second half of the 19th century—one that thrived for nearly a century before its virtual disappearance. The garment industry, often called the "needle trade," became the city’s industrial powerhouse, employing over 20,000 workers across dozens of factories and dominating the men’s clothing business throughout the United States.Men’s suits were the primary product, accompanied by accessories such as ties and shoes. Perhaps most notably, the iconic London Fog raincoat became a staple in the wardrobes of mid-20th-century men, further cementing Baltimore’s legacy in the garment industry.
