Is it possible to feel physical discomfort without automatically feeling mental anguish? Is it possible to recognize a situation as unpleasant and not resist the unpleasantness? We sometimes highlight the fact that pain can be multiplied by our resistance to it, often resulting in a greater overall sense of suffering. What’s the relationship between pain and suffering in our mindfulness practice?
This day of practice will explore the 2nd foundation of mindfulness in the early Buddhist teachings: awareness of feeling tones, or vedana in the Pali language. We’ll begin the day with introductions to the topic, then dedicate the time to observing, feeling and investigating the relationship between feeling tone (pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral) and its impact on our mental states (wanting, not wanting, or confusion), leading to greater wisdom and opportunity. We will move between periods of stillness and movement, with time for lunch and rest.
This program is for those who have completed MBSR or with other prior mindfulness experience. For those attending in person, please bring your own lunch.
This session will follow CDC guidelines and UW Health screenings that are in effect at the time of the class session.
