About this event
Description
Gourd rattles are traditional percussion instruments made from dried gourds, often filled with seeds, stones, or beads to create sound. They are used in various cultural contexts, including Native American rituals, where they hold spiritual significance and are often gifted with care. The construction typically involves hollowing out a gourd and attaching a handle, sometimes decorated with wraps or tassels. Gourd rattles can also be used in dances and ceremonies, adding a rhythmic element to the performance. Using coyote gourds and small bottle gourds, beads, feathers, and carved oak sticks; students will paint, assemble, and decorate a gourd rattle. In recognition of Native American Heritage month, Pamunkey gourd artist Yvonne Goad will lead this activity.Activity Family
