Description

09. NORTH BY NORTHWEST (Thursday, October 30)
In the northwestern corner of Spain white wines made with Albariño and Godello shine. Since the late 1990s, reds from the rediscovered Mencía grape joined them. Its old vines enticed star winemakers such as Alvaro Palacios, Mariano García and Raúl Pérez, who soon put on the world wine map the remote and mountainous Bierzo area and the scenic region of Ribeira Sacra along the Sil River. Their top wines, with distinctive minerality and untapped potential, have swiftly gone from being almost unknown to producing unique reds that have even elicited comparisons with Guigal’s famous Cote Rôties. They have also added diversity to Spain’s wine landscape, uncovered the potential of older and forgotten varieties, and captivated demanding American critics. This seminar is devoted to the distinctive wines of the northwestern corner of Spain, some of which have achieved cult status in record time and are available only in minuscule quantities.
