This practicum is for the student who has an interest in pursuing an education or career within the field of sports medicine. Preferably, this student will have taken Kinesiology, Anatomy & Physiology, or both. The goal of this internship is to give students exposure to the sports medicine side of athletics as an educational experience while also providing practical experiences and hands-on learning. The classes are not prerequisites for the course and no prior knowledge is required. However, an introductory knowledge of human anatomy will be helpful during the time spent in the internship. The practicum will be 3 weeks long for 3 hours Monday-Friday. This internship will involve times of observation, discussions, presentations, and applied learning opportunities. Students will observe the day-to-day operations of the sports medicine staff in areas such as taping, recovery, practice set-up, and more. Students will begin to learn some of the skills demonstrated and practice them on each other and the sports medicine staff. Students will learn about the use of modalities, assessment and treatment of athletic injuries, prevention of injury, and more. Each week every student will also bring an article that they have read to discuss with the other students and sports medicine staff. Students will obtain hands-on learning experience by helping to set up for games and practices, preparing and restocking supplies, maintaining a clean environment, and more. The practicum will expose students to several disciplines within the field of sports medicine and they will be able to hear from professionals in those fields. There will also be field trip/ guest speaker opportunities to expand the scope that the students are exposed to.
