This weekend-intensive is for actors who have previously worked with Joe Alberti or, with instructor permission, experienced actors new to this approach. The workshop will expand your embodied understanding of the methodology by exploring challenging material. This will include gaining a greater facility by articulating answers to the fundamental questions: Who am I? Where and When am I? What do I Want? How do I get it? What Happens if I get or don’t get what I want? The workshop will cover creating images consistent with the given circumstances, personalization, the moment before, beats, and the "how" of action, with a focus on threading and sourcing—defining, inventing, and being vulnerable to sources. We’ll also examine how different styles of writing affect an actor’s approach, especially when working with Chekhov, Ibsen, and Strindberg, and how these the influences of these playwrights carry into contemporary texts. Actors will learn how to adjust their approach to meet the demands of varied text, including for working in film. We will also explore Gister’s “Three Levels of Theatrical Reality,” an advanced approach for exercising transformation. Only 12 people are permitted to enroll in this weekend.
