About this event
Why do we hold on to certain objects—a ticket stub, a seashell, a button—and how do they keep our memories alive? During this evocative workshop with artist and filmmaker Jessica Oreck and her Office of Collecting and Design, we’ll explore memory and nostalgia through the wonder of tiny treasures and forgotten fragments. Known for their captivating photographs called flatlays—careful arrangements of objects shot from directly above—the Office invites you to engage in this unique art form. Jessica, the museum’s curator, will bring two giant tubs of treasure from the Office of Collecting & Design’s collections for participants to sort through. After selecting an array of objects that resonate, you’ll be guided through the art of arranging your own flatlay. Jessica then photographs your creation, and you’ll leave with an instant film print—a tangible keepsake of your memory crafted through objects. This workshop encourages a fresh appreciation for the overlooked details in everyday life. Many participants find themselves seeing the world anew, as objects once ignored or discarded take on new meaning and purpose. It’s a celebration of value, memory, and creative reuse. Want to wander deeper into this world of collected wonders? After the workshop, we’ll host an after-hours trip next door to experience the Office in person from 6-7 PM. Admission is just $12 for a visit to the Office of Collecting and Design.
