About this event

Description

Join us on Saturday, September 13 at 10:30 a.m. in the plank kitchen at Historic Oak View for an introduction to the history of southern foodways and the cultural fusions that shaped the region's diverse food systems. Discover the story of Eliza Hutchings, an enslaved woman at Oak View, and how the transition from slavery to freedom affected the domestic work and skills of women in the 19th and 20th centuries. Afterwards, participants can engage in some hands-on history and try making butter! This program is free, but registration is required for all participants. Recommended for upper-elementary age and older.
Walk-up registration will be available day-of pending open spots. We will run the program rain or shine, so please come prepared with weather appropriate clothing. The tour will take place in a non-climate controlled historic building, and includes standing and walking between buildings on paved brick paths.
Upon arrival, participants should check in with park staff in the Farm History Center (the visitors center building). Please let us know in advance if you or anyone in your group requires accessibility modifications/ADA accommodations. As a courtesy to other participants, the waitlist and the instructor, if you find you have a change in plans and can no longer attend, please email oakview@wake.gov or call 919-250-1013.
