About this event
Through writing exercises and discourse around personal histories and subjective “moments of being,” we will explore what French writer Guy Debord coined “psychogeography.” As writers, we will examine how connecting to the spirit of place can transform our ways of seeing and so make our stories better. If it’s true that one can never experience any art through dullness or distraction, then how can our own stories benefit from the interplay between “recollection in tranquility” and the place we call home to encourage us to have new ways of seeing, transforming us and hopefully our writing in ways we couldn’t imagine? Does the “spirit” of a place open us up to the possibilities of a work of art being a more sensory and sensual experience besides being an intellectual one? What can the geographical environment we find ourselves in teach us about the ecstasy of surrender and the ontological questions of “being and non-being.” Open to anyone interested in making their stories shine—thematically, structurally, and poetically—as well as to those interested in the philosophical, psychological, and metaphysical influence of place on our imaginations.
