This is a hands-on exploratory course to understand and identify the common lichens of our Maine forests. We will work to understand the mystery of what lichens are, how they grow and reproduce and their role in the ecosystem. We will identify samples in class using a hand lens. On Saturday, October 4, those who wish will meet on the Mt Battie Rd (Rt 1 Camden) for a field trip to explore the many lichens found there 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM. We will use journals for notes and drawings throughout (a small sketch book and pencil is all you need, but bring colored pencils, too, if you like).
