About this event
**This is a brand new program, and some details are still under construction pending fully melted snow. Any changes to the plan will be communicated via email** Join us as we survey for the American Pika on the Steamboat Ski Resort! Learn about how these little lagomorphs are carving out an existence here in the Yampa Valley, as well as ways you can help them as their habitat is lost to climate change. This guided hike and wildlife survey will include using the Pika Patrol app to gather data to help the US Forest Service better understand our local pika colonies. Along the way, we will conduct a Nature's Notebook survey of local flora to gain a better understanding of the habitat as a whole. What to expect: This nature walk is ~3 miles long out and back with 700 feet of elevation gain at 10,000 feet. The terrain is uneven, and no clear path is marked. Hiking boots are recommended. Wear comfortable clothing for the weather as well as plenty of sunscreen! Make sure to bring water, a hat, and snacks/lunch. We ask that you please leave furry friends at home! Due to the community science nature of this program, and the shared transportation, this program is not a good candidate for service animals to attend. Where to meet: We will meet at the Thunderhead Lift parking area at 3150 Burgess Creek Road in Steamboat.
