This program takes place at Mote's Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration (IC2R3) in Summerland Key, Florida and at Captain Hooks Dive Center located in Big Pine. Join SCUBAPRO and Mote Marine Laboratory as a citizen scientist and receive hands-on opportunities to make a positive difference in the health of our coral reef system. Spend a day learning about coral reef science, helping fragment coral utilizing Mote’s science-based research to create genetically identical duplicates that grow as much as 50x faster than a natural coral. After spending a morning with Mote Scientists, dive activities may include helping to maintain Mote’s expansive in-water nurseries, and monitoring coral health. Activities will be dependent on water and weather conditions. Price includes a coral restoration workshop, training on coral fragmentation, a 2-tank dive and a citizen science card. Note: Scuba equipment rental is not included but can be arranged through the dive shop if joining a group trip or directly with the dive operator if booking independently. Tanks and dive weight will be provided. Ages: 15+ no exceptions; participants age 15-17 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. All divers MUST have completed a dive within one year prior to the session date, or the dive operator will require a refresher course.
