How to Get Your Partner to Say Yes to Another Bike

Written by
You may be looking to get another bike or upgrade your old standby. Some cyclists want an entire garage filled wall-to-wall with bicycles no matter the type or latest technology while others are looking for the next great ride. No matter your desire, a steep price tag is almost always part of the territory. And with that price tag comes the unavoidable fact that you'll have to convince your partner it's time for another bike. Consider trying one of these methods to get them to say yes.
Buy Them a Bike

As the philosophy principle Occam's razor states, the simplest solution is the best one. It is easy to convince your partner that you need a new bike when they also need a new bike. In fact, they need one sooner.
Sell Your Old Bike

Maybe your goal isn't to own a bike for each day of the week. Nevertheless, you do want to upgrade to something newer, better and faster. This is easier to do when you plan to sell your current bike for cash or donate it to make space in your "bike room."
Bikes for Different Needs

Depending on the terrain you plan to ride on, you will need a different bike entirely. Your partner can't expect you to ride a road bike on a dirt trail or your time trial bike as a city cruiser. Just like you have shoes for running, weddings and walking around, you need a bike for every occasion.
Matching Your Outfit

When you buy a new outfit, you need to have matching shoes. The same logic applies when you buy a new kit. You obviously need a bike to match. You might even need one in every color just to be safe.
Bargain Bike

Find a bike that is a bargain and would be insane to pass up. Look on eBay, Facebook market or your local bike shop for good deals. You end up recycling instead of participating in the throw-away economy.
Share the Components

Maybe you don't need a whole new bike. Instead, buy new components or parts of the bike. Maybe just a new frame but use the same wheels since you can't ride two bikes at the same time anyway. Make sure your bikes are the same speed, so it is easy to switch things around.
Can't Argue With Math

There is a basic mathematical formula that no logical person can argue with: x=n+1, where "x" is the number of bikes you need, and "n" is the current number of bikes you have. It's simple math.
Get a Job at a Bike Shop

You will spend your money as quickly as you make it. Working in a bike shop will require you test the merchandise so you know what is best for your customers. You will also get a nice discount.
Bikes for Guests

Everyone has family visit them from time to time. Obviously you need a bike for each family member coming to visit so you can spend time together cruising around town or on the trails. It is way better than watching Netflix all day long.
Backup Bike

Biking to work is a great alternative to driving or taking public transportation. If one of your bike's chains breaks or a tire goes flat, you will need a backup. If you are training for a triathlon and need to ship your bike to the race location a week before, you will still need to train. Having an extra bike just makes sense.
