How to Maintain Fitness in the Offseason

You've worked hard to get your fitness to the best it could be this season. So when you take a post-season break from training, you want to maintain that fitness without burning out. Here's a few tips for staying fit—and having fun—between seasons.
Mountain Bike

Go off road! Mountain biking is a great way to have fun on the bike while also improving your bike-handling skills.
Costumed Ride

Tweed rides, l'eroica rides and other themed bike rides can be a lot of fun. If there's not a costumed ride in your city, start one yourself.
Ride a Gran Fondo

A gran fondo—or "big ride"—is a great way to have fun on the bike with friends. Expect well-stocked rest stops and mechanical support.
Take a Hike

You'll strengthen muscles you don't normally use when running, as well as improve balance and footwork.

Bonus: if you're a dog owner, hiking is the perfect time to bring along your four-legged friend.
Enter A Fun Run

Try a color run, an obstacle race or any non-traditional competition to break up your routine and give yourself a fresh perspective.
Rowing

If you have access to a rowing ergometer, it's is a great cross-training option. Few sports are as physically challenging as rowing.

Tip: Rowing is a complex motion, so to prevent injury, make sure to get proper instruction on form and use of the erg.
Group Fitness

If there's a November Project meetup in your area, it's is a great way to stay fit alongside like-minded individuals. Bootcamps and CrossFit boxes are common too and can be another good option.
SUP

Standup paddling challenges your balance, trains muscles that aren't normally used during tri training and helps you maintain general fitness. Plus, it's fun trying something completely new.
Yoga

Yoga helps you improve flexibility and strengthen muscles neglected during in-season training.
Strength Training

Maintaining muscle mass, injury prevention and building muscular endurance are just a few reasons to hit the gym—especially if it's the area of tri training you often "forgot" during the season.
