This group is an informal community of adult VCM music students who play a variety of instruments, at all levels of ability, and who wish to perform in a friendly, supportive, and relaxed setting. Participation is open exclusively to current VCM students.

  • You must be a registered VCM student to participate

  • The group will meet October, November, and January–May: regular sessions on Sundays from 1:00–3:00 pm, and long repertoire sessions on Tuesdays from 10:00 am–Noon.

  • To registrar contact the Front Desk by calling 250-386-5311 or visit us in person.

  • Those wishing to perform must sign up by the Wednesday before the event using the form sent by James Yi, Animateur, at collegium@vcm.ca

  • A participant will host the group at each event. As this is a self-run group, all participants are expected to share in volunteer duties. For the social time following the regular sessions, each participant is asked to bring a ‘goodie’ to share, their own beverage, and to help ensure the room is left clean and tidy. The long repertoire sessions do not include social time.

  • To support those still gaining confidence with public performance, friends, family members, and teachers are not invited to attend the performances.

  • Collaborative or supportive individuals—such as accompanists, ensemble members, group directors, or support people for performers with disabilities—are welcome. Non-VCM guests/performers must be approved on a case-by-case basis by the Animateur.

  • All participants are considered ‘performers,’ but no one is required to perform at every recital—just to contribute to the group (such as bringing a ‘goodie’). New members may observe once before performing the following month. After that, members perform when they feel ready and at their own discretion. Active or observing, all participants need to register.

  • Performances can include works in progress—pieces do not need to be polished if the performer is eager to give them a first airing. Repeated performances are welcome if time allows.

  • Participants are expected to have their instruments tuned and be ready when it is their turn to perform.

  • Regular sessions allow for up to 6 minutes of stage time per performer. Participants are expected to stay within the time they indicated at registration. Members wanting more time should register for the long repertoire sessions.

  • Whenever possible, accompanists are encouraged to come from within the group, though this is not mandatory. Scheduling is arranged to allow professionals to leave as early as possible after performing.

  • There is no fee for these sessions — they are part of the Conservatory Advantage.
