WRITING BETTER LYRICS
Our Songwriting Skills and Strategies series is designed to inspire our students by helping them find new and deeper connections to their creative voice. By exploring from a variety of diverse viewpoints, students will develop a strong sense of form, melody, harmony, and rhythm. Each class will offer students chances to discover new ways of combining words and music into satisfying songs, under the guidance of our amazing artist-educators Colleen Eccleston and Wynn Gogol. Welcome to students of all levels—whether you have been writing for years or have never written a thing! Re-enrollment is strongly encouraged, as students will make new connections and discoveries each time. However, these classes do not need to be taken sequentially.
Is there an ideal way to write lyrics that lead to inspiring songs?
This course will help you write strongly and clearly in your own unique voice, as you learn how to generate better ideas and craft satisfying lyrics. Explore ways to shape language, rhythm and rhyme into vivid verses, refrains, and bridges. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced writer, this course will help you discover the next level in your songwriting journey.
By the end of this course, you will:• Have useful generators for your lyrics• Find more expressive words for your ideas• Sing a variety of rhythms with your words• Write more engaging rhymes• use power lines effectively• Create contrast between sections• Understand how section structures can enhance your lyric's emotional impact
