Saturday, 9 AM - 5 PM / Sunday, 9 AM - 3 PM This workshop will explore the use of thickened clay paste resist with indigo dye to make unique patterns on fabric. We will cover all the basics of dyeing with natural indigo, including vat care, upkeep, and maintenance. Students will mix their own clay paste and explore surface design techniques, such as block printing, screen printing, painting, and more, to create beautiful resist patterns. Drawing from clay-rich soil, we will also cover foraging and processing wild clay. Students will make samples and finished pieces as we cover the techniques needed to begin an indigo practice or expand an existing one. A general interest in the natural world and natural materials is all you need for this workshop. *Students should bring natural fiber yardage (at least 2 yards) and/or clothing: cotton, linen, silk, wool, etc. *Class price includes materials fee. Kristin Arzt I am a natural dyer, educator, gardener, and designer. I teach workshops and lead retreats all over the country, served on the board of Local Cloth, and been involved in Fibersheds, from Northern California, to the Mid-Atlantic, to the Blue Ridge Mountains. By exploring the collision of textiles, plants, and sustainability, my goal is to help make the study of natural dyes accessible to everyone through education and enthusiasm. I am lifelong learner and student of yoga (RYT200), and currently enrolled in my third Yoga Teacher Training program. I often draw elements from these teachings in into my creative workshops. When not teaching in-person and online courses, I grow my own seasonal dye plants at home for closer experimentation; often sharing seeds and sprouts with students. After becoming enamored with the world of natural color, I have taken years to expand my toolkit, traveling far and wide to learn directly with specialized teachers in the dye community.
