Description

Expressive Botanical Drawing in Colored Pencilw/Anne KullafOctober 9 - November 6(Includes botanical samples fee)Anne Kullaf

Using colored pencils, you will learn how to create expressive yet highly detailed drawings of plants and flowers observed from life. Each week, a new species of flower or plant will be introduced, and each student will receive an individual stem to work from. We will draw leaves, berries, blossoms, and other botanical subjects from direct observation focusing on form, value, gesture, proportion, and color. Students will learn how to use colored pencils to create color harmony and variation. We will work on different color papers to understand how the background color affects the outcome of the drawing. Techniques such as layering, blending, and using ink for detailed line work will be demonstrated in each session. Emphasis will be placed on creating an accurate, expressive representation of the overall subject first, followed by addition of details once the form of the subject has been established. All levels including beginners are welcome, individual assistance and guidance will be provided throughout the course. Demonstrations, lectures, and critiques will be done in each session, focusing on a variety of concepts specific to the flower or plant that is the subject of the session. Materials:• Stillman & Birn Nova Trio 8"x8" or 6"x8" sketchbook - this sketchbook has three shades of high-quality drawing paper in it: black, tan, and grey. It is perfect for keeping your drawings organized, and for making notes alongside them if you wish to do so. It comes in either a wire-bound or soft-cover version, either will work, buy whichever style you prefer.• Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils - I recommend getting the 36-pencil set or larger, this will ensure that you have enough variety and value range of each color. If you already have colored pencils that are a different brand or a smaller set, you may use them. I can work with you to achieve results similar to the Prismacolors.• High Quality Pencil Sharpener - Staedtler Mars makes a great two-hole sharpener that works well with colored pencils. There is also a sharpener made by Prismacolor specifically for its pencils. Cheap sharpeners don't always work well with colored pencils, they sometimes break off before you can get them sharp enough.• Uniball Vision Elite Fine Point Black Pen - We will use this to combine a little bit of pen & ink line work in some of our drawings. Any black fine point will work, but if you have to buy one, this is a good one to have.• Blending Stumps - If you like a more blended look to your drawings, you may use a blending stump to achieve a smoother finish. Blending stumps are small sticks of rolled paper, pointed at one end, that you can rub over your drawing to blend the colors. A pack of small ones will be sufficient.
