Week Eight - Karen Eckenroth - A Survey of Women in Music

Bronwynn Theater • 777 Evening Street WorthingtonOH  43085 Organized by Peggy R. McConnell Arts Center of Worthington

About this event

Do you know who Hildegard was? How about Francesca Caccini, Clara Schumann, Ethel Smyth, Amy Beach, or Libby Larsen? What contributions did these women, and others like them, make to the advancement and growth of musical styles and characteristics. More importantly, how did those contributions and sacrifices pave the way for the success of contemporary artists like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Pink, Adele, and Rihanna? This course is a survey of the history of women’s contributions to the world of music. Dr. Karen Eckenroth is an Associate Professor of Music at Otterbein University where she heads the vocal area and coordinates the Opera Theatre program. She received both her Bachelor and Masters degrees from Penn State University and her Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance and Choral Conducting from the University of Arizona where she studied with Elizabeth Mosher and Paula Fan. In addition to her administrative work at Otterbein, she also teaches courses in the History of Women in Music, Art Song Literature, Vocal Pedagogy and Diction, and an Introduction to the Music Profession. Dr. Eckenroth is also Organist and Choir Director at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Bexley.
